Good eats at Chloe’s Corner
So remember the breakfast that bombed last week? Here’s one that won’t. You can get it at Chloe’s Corner at Kierland Commons in Scottsdale.
I’m not kidding you. This place, formerly in the space that was known as The Counter, serves up some good grub. Breakfast, sandwiches, soups, salads and some hard-to-resist (but I did) cookies, brownies, muffins, cheesecake and Rice Krispie treats (Oh, kill me with sweetness, why don’t you?!)–all of them stacked in glass containers right in front of you, looking as fresh as I’m sure they are.
What else makes this place so special? Well, it’s bright and open, so you can read the Sunday paper, no problem. It’s tidy and friendly. It just feels like breakfast sunshine. The staff greet you with smiles, serve you with smiles and chat with you if you want. The restaurant’s long counter in back, facing the kitchen, seems to be the popular spot. I’ve sat there each time I’ve eaten there.
You can watch the chefs at work. I saw a guy make five Roast Beef sandwiches–and he had the system down, one ingredient at a time. Toasted bread, mayo-mustard spread, swiss cheese, roast beef, tomatoes. It made me want to order one myself.
But I was there for breakfast. So here comes the best deal. Coffee for 50 cents. You read that right. 50 cents. What is that? Two quarters. Five dimes. 10 nickels. Or $1 for two. And they don’t charge for refills. C’mon, where can you get a good cup of coffee for such a low price? I got nothing. No idea.
Not only that. When you leave, they offer you the take-home cup. There’s only one other place I know of where I’ve been offered that–the Orange Table, also in Scottsdale–and I was impressed. It’s customer service like the customer wants, you know, a nice gesture. So simple. So unexpected. And so appreciated. Who knew? Coffee to go. More restaurants should try that.
Okay, enough of the gushing over coffee. Back to breakfast. It’s good eatin’ here. It just is. It’s home-style, a lot of it, and very tasty.
I ordered the Egg Sandwich. They offer tomato slices and/or avocado slicesĀ as an extra. I suggest going for it. Makes all the difference in taste, and you get two servings of veggies before lunchtime. Worth it.
My boyfriend ordered the Chorizo and Egg Burrito. It’s made of two scrambled eggs mixed with chorizo sausage, so it’s a little spicey. They add cheddar cheese, tomatilla salsa and wrap it in a spinach tortilla. You can make this at home. But why? We both ate for less than $20, and $5 cheaper than Two Hippies.
Next time I go, I want to try lunch. Maybe I’ll order one of those roast beef sanwiches. Or, I could go for a salad and try the poppy seed dressing or the lemon-oregano vinaigrette. Doesn’t that sound good?
Better yet, the place offers all kinds of picnic style goodies. From ice cold sodas, to wine, to yogurt parfaits in a cup, just pack a bag and go. I think you’ll like it.
